Wolff: Nine teams should be considered victims

Christian Horner’s speech about the financial regulation violations situation at Saturday’s press conference in Austin caused quite a stir, but the head of the Mercedes team, Toto Wolff, was not particularly impressed.

“When I listened to it, I almost burst into tears,” he said ironically on Sky Deutschland. – We also counted how many sandwiches were distributed and what to do with other cost categories, which are very numerous. Whether Red Bull’s overspending is a million, two or five, I don’t know, it provides a financial benefit that can be realized in the modernization process.

Horner demonstrates a kind of reverse psychology, and the question arises: who is the victim in this situation? I think nine other teams should be considered victims.

In previous years, there were occasional unclear situations, such as a year ago in Brazil we were disqualified for the fact that the rear wing of our car opened 0.2 mm further than the technical regulations prescribe. I believe that financial regulations are no less important than technical or sports regulations.

The reason Formula 1 has moved to tight budgets is to create conditions in which all teams can compete by spending an equal amount. If one of them simultaneously allows exceedance, whatever the reasons may be, that is contrary to the spirit of the general conventions.

Wolff was also asked to comment on an unpleasant incident that took place in Austin during a meeting of Red Bull racers with fans: Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez were booed and voices chanted in unison one word: “crooks” from the crowd.

“This is unacceptable,” said the Mercedes head. – Nobody wants to see expressions of such unkindness, and it doesn’t matter if it happens on stage or during a meeting with fans. I think everyone in Formula 1 is against this behavior and at the start of the season there was a lot of talk about this topic.

But these things happen from time to time. In Austria the public was anti-Lewis, but here the fans really don’t like Max. But between all teams of the championship equal proportions. There is a bitter rivalry on and off the track, but there is no animosity between us.”
