Before the start of the US Grand Prix, Formula 1 paid tribute to the memory of Dietrich Mateschitz, who died the day before at the age of 78, co-owner of Red Bull, which owns two championship teams.
But the ceremony was unusual: David Coulthard, who once played for Red Bull Racing, invited everyone to honor Mateschitz’s memory with applause, after which The Rolling Stones song erupted over the starting field of the COTA circuit.
“He wouldn’t like it if we kept a minute of silence,” said Christian Horner. “That’s why we played loud music – Dietrich loved motorsport, he loved racing, and the best we can do for him is try to win the constructors’ championship today.
I have many wonderful memories of him, but most of the time I remember his phrase, “Without risk, there is no fun.” That’s how he lived his whole life. He didn’t like black bracelets or a moment of silence, so we started The Rolling Stones because he loved their music…”
