Mekis: Poles sometimes have a prize in races

Ferrari sports director Laurent Mekis praised Carlos Sainz’s qualifying performance, but before summing up Saturday, he said a few words about Dietrich Mateschitz, who died the day before at the age of 78.

“Obviously this is a huge loss. He had his own vision for the development of motorsport, he did a lot for this and left a very important legacy,” said Mekis. “I was fortunate to have worked for his Toro Rosso team for many years and now his natural Our thoughts are with his family, his friends and the entire Red Bull community.

Speaking of qualifying, Carlos did a great job, although it wasn’t easy, as a significant portion of Friday’s practice was devoted to Pirelli tire testing, and in the first session one of our cars was driven by Robert Schwartzman. That’s why it was a little harder to understand how competitive we are than usual.

But Carlos and Charles worked very effectively in the final training and were able to find the right settings. In qualifying they pushed each other and eventually Sainz won his third pole position. But already at several stages he was very close to his partner, so this is a well-deserved result.

High speed in qualifying is achieved by a whole combination of factors. I think one of our strengths is the ability to immediately achieve efficient tire operation, which allows us to show good results in the first fast lap. Admittedly, sometimes we have to pay for this in races, because one of our weaknesses is the increased tire wear.

Because of this, we sometimes face more serious problems compared to rivals, but we try to find the right balance and make improvements. It is important to achieve a reduction in tire wear, but at the same time maintain the ability to quickly warm it up in one circle.

We expect a very sharp battle to unfold in the course of the race, in which Mercedes will also participate. We have to pay tribute to Carlos and Charles, they coped well with the difficult conditions in qualifying as there was a very strong gust of wind, but both showed their skills. And the team has set up the car well.

In addition, it seems to me that Carlos usually manages to run races better than qualifying, while Charles is able to perform excellently in qualifying, which we have seen more than once this year. However, this does not mean that they work worse on other days of the weekend. But we are all the more happy for Sainz, as he went to this pole position for a long time.
