Early in the race, Verstappen passed Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz to take the lead. The Spaniard, who had taken the second pole of his career the day before, retired following contact with the car of George Russell (Mercedes) on the first lap.
Second place goes to seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. The British Mercedes driver was leading in the second part of the race, but on lap 50 he let Verstappen pass. The top 3 was closed by Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), who started 12th because of a fine.
At the end of the United States Grand Prix, Red Bull won the team’s fifth constructors’ championship, securing an unattainable lead over Ferrari. At the previous round of Formula 1 in Japan, Verstappen won his second career title ahead of schedule.
