Lewis Hamilton led the race in Austin and Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff admitted that when Verstappen got stuck behind Leclerc he thought Lewis had a chance to win.
Toto Wolff: “At one point, when Lewis was six seconds ahead and it looked like the opponents wouldn’t be able to recover, I thought we had a chance.
Unfortunately the car didn’t have enough speed on hard tires and we simply didn’t have any new Medium sets, but at some point the win seemed very real. When Max was ahead of Charles and Lewis couldn’t ride at the same pace, we understood he wouldn’t have anything to counter the attack.
Perhaps our expectations for the start of the weekend were a bit exaggerated, but overall it turned out to be positive. We are making steady progress and have taken another step forward. Our dynamics are now similar to the rising stock price, but it is clear that as well as upsides there are also downsides.
