Sebastian Vettel had a brilliant race in Austin – taking his career leadership laps to 3500, losing time in the pit stop due to a breakdown, but rebounding and overtaking Kevin Magnussen on the final lap in the battle for eighth place instead. According to the results of the fans’ vote, Sebastian was recognized as the “Rider of the Day”.
His Aston Martin teammate Lance Stroll collided with Fernando Alonso and retired.
Sebastian Vettel (8th): “Closer to the finish I bounced back and earned four points. I really enjoyed the last laps, especially the fight with Kevin in the last one. When I crossed the finish line my adrenaline was through the roof.
Without the slow pit stop, I think I would have easily finished sixth. I think we need to focus more on the positive result of the race – that the car had a competitive pace.
I was fast the whole race – I had a great start and climbed up to fifth. It was nice to be in the lead for a while – it’s been a long time since I’ve been in that position.”
Lance Walk (retirement): “I had a good start, was happy with the car and was in third place for a while. Unfortunately we ran into Fernando. We had a big speed difference when I was defending. I left plenty of room for him on the left side of the track – I wasn’t trying to push him against the wall, he could start the maneuver earlier or go to the left.
Luckily it didn’t hit the protective barrier very hard, so I’m fine.”
Mike KrakTeam Principal: “After the third and fifth laps on the first lap we are disappointed that we only finished eighth and stopped, but that’s racing.
After the safety car went out due to the departure of Valtteri Bottas we were in sixth and seventh place, we expected to earn a lot of points, but then Lance and Fernando collided. For Lance, the race was over and Sebastian had problems at the second pit stop, which caused him to roll back to 13th place.
However, he bounced back great and finished eighth, and the highlight was a great battle with Magnussen on the last lap, which luckily ended in Sebastian’s favour.
