It happens that even the best racers have catastrophic bad luck on their home circuit – Monaco for Charles Leclerc is one such case.
It seems he should know the streets of his hometown better than anyone else, but this isn’t the first time, for some inexplicable reason, he’s been haunted by failures there.
The fact that this weekend is the historic Grand Prix in Monaco, we told yesterday. In addition to the actual races, the Sunday program also featured Leclerc’s demonstration races in the Ferrari 312 B3, which was entered by Niki Lauda in 1974.
Charles lost control of the number 12 car Lauda used in the 1974 and 1975 seasons towards the end of the lap for the Rascasse corner. Most likely the brakes failed, the car flipped over and it all ended with a rather hard contact with the guardrail.
The rear of the historic 312 B3 was shattered, the rear wing suffered first, but Leclerc returned to the pits alone, after which he commented on what had happened as follows: “When you thought all the world’s problems were you in Monaco has happened is already in the past, before you turn on the Rascasse, your brakes fail, and on one of the most legendary cars in Formula 1 history.
Charles is not exaggerating at all: in the Monaco Grand Prix he never managed to finish – neither in 2018, when he drove for Alfa Romeo, nor in 2019, when Leclerc had already become a Ferrari driver. Last season he even won qualifying, but the car crashed at the end of the last session and couldn’t even start the race.
Ferrari fans can only hope that today’s ridiculous accident will be the latest in a string of these problems, and that Charles Leclerc will be able to perform more successfully in two weeks’ time in Monaco than in previous years.
