The Austin race was the third in a row in which Guanyu Zhou did not score any points. In Mexico City, however, the Alfa Romeo driver spoke about the positive results of the past weekend and the team’s chances against Aston Martin for sixth place in the constructors’ championship.
Guanyu Zhou: “The result in Austin was not what the team wanted, but we have seen a lot of positive things. In the end we were able to fight with two cars to get to the final of qualifying – if my lap hadn’t been cancelled, I would have been in the top ten. Due to a penalty for changing the bike, I started far enough behind to prepare for a tough race in which I finished 11th.
Obviously we have yet to add to the race, but it is clear that the speed of the car has increased compared to several previous stages. This suggests that the updates the team has prepared are working.
Fighting Aston Martin? Traditionally we perform better in qualifying and they have an advantage in races. However, it is very difficult to predict in whose favor the confrontation will end. It’s no secret that in the last races, out of Singapore, they were very competitive and scored a lot of points. This allowed them to close the gap with us – they are only one point behind.
We will do our best to finish the season above them in the Constructors’ Championship. Given what kind of car we have at our disposal, this is possible. My partner and I will do everything we can to achieve this.”
