Next year, the temperature in thermal covers for preheating tires will be reduced to 50 degrees, and in 2024 they plan to ban them altogether – the temperature of the tires will be equal to the ambient temperature.
Last week in Austin, riders tested the harder 2023 slippery compounds, warmed up to 50 degrees, today they will test the softer ones in the second practice. Max Verstappen thinks that with cold tires the number of accidents will increase considerably.
Max Verstappen: “I almost turned around when I left the pits in Austin. I think if thermal covers are banned we will see a lot of accidents. And tire wear will increase. During the early laps, until the tires have warmed up, the car will slide, the pressure in the tires will go off the shell – and they degrade much faster.
In Austin’s fast corners, the tires warm up pretty quickly, but somewhere like Monaco, especially in mixed conditions, you can be halfway through the race before the tires warm up.
In Formula 2 there are no thermal covers, but they have a much less powerful engine, they are much lighter, they are much easier to drive. But if you overdo the accelerator while driving in Formula 1, a serious accident can happen on cold tires.
