The International Automobile Federation (FIA) granted the protest “Alpine” on the decision to penalize the team’s Spanish driver Fernando Alonso after the United States Grand Prix.
Thus, the protocol restored the initial result of the 41-year-old Spaniard, displayed at the finish of the race in Austin: 7th place (6 points).
After the United States Grand Prix last weekend, Haas protested Alonso’s result on the grounds that his damaged car was a threat to everyone else in the race. After an accident with Lance Stroll (Aston Martin), the Alpin car, in particular, broke the right mirror. The stewards accepted Haas’ comments and fined Alonso 30 seconds, dropping him to 15th in the final standings.
The French team then counter-protested that Alonso had not been informed by race direction of the critical damage to the car and had not been warned by flags during the race. It was also alleged that Haas filed his protest after the deadline.
On Thursday, the FIA dismissed Alpin’s protest, prompting the team to seek the right to a new trial, citing new evidence. As a result, Haas was found to have missed the 30-minute time limit to file a protest, nullifying it and returning the original result to Alonso.
— The team welcomes the decision taken by the stewards, according to which car number 14 regains its seventh place and its six points in the race. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the FIA to ensure the highest quality racing spectacle,” Alpin said in a statement on Twitter.
The next stage of the championship will take place in Mexico from October 28-30.
