Gary Anderson on sanctions against Red Bull Racing

Gary Anderson, a former race car designer and now an expert for The Race, commented on the sanctions the FIA has imposed on the Red Bull Racing team. He believes that the fines could be stricter, so that from now on it would be unpleasant for everyone to break the financial rules.

Gary Anderson: “I’m just glad this is all over and we can finally get to the rest of the races so that the headlines are mostly sports news.

The $7 million fine will not be deducted from next year’s budget, so in reality, if you have the money, it’s no big deal at all. It is even less than the difference between the two positions in the Constructors’ Championship.

As for the 10% reduction in time spent on aerodynamic studies, that just means Adrian Newey and his colleagues will have to strain their thinking skills a bit more.

Now this story sets a precedent and reveals how the FIA is dealing with any facts of non-compliance with the budget cap. But I can’t call this precedent good.

I’m not saying that the federation should have taken points from the team, but the fine should have been deducted from next year’s budget and the time limits for aerodynamic research should have been stricter.

If there are financial rules in Formula 1 now, it is necessary to enforce them and punish offenders so that no one is tempted to spend too much.
