Lewis Hamilton has confirmed that he plans to extend his contract with Mercedes and continue racing in Formula 1 until he is 40. The seven-time world champion previously said he couldn’t imagine racing at that age as the 37-year-old looked for other ventures.

But just weeks ago Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff revealed negotiations with the star driver over a new deal had already begun, with Hamilton’s current contract expiring at the end of 2023.

Now Hamilton has said he is fully committed to racing despite what may have been the worst year of his long career.

“We’ll sit down and talk about it over the next few months,” Hamilton said. “My goal is to continue working with Mercedes. I’ve been with Mercedes since I was 13 and they really are my family.” “As for how long Hamilton can keep playing, he hinted that he could keep playing for another five seasons if he’s happy with it.
