The only female Formula 1 steward, Spain’s Silvia Bellot, was harassed on social media when Fernando Alonso was fined in Austin, where she was one of the stewards.
When Alonso and his team heard about this, they stood up for Silvia and said that such an attitude is unacceptable.
Fernando Alonso: “I strongly condemn the hate speech on the internet against FIA steward Silvia Bellot.
Such hatred is unacceptable in sport and in society. It is especially unfortunate that these comments are directed at one of our sport’s female volunteers and officials.
I will continue to support the FIA and Formula 1 in the fight against such violations and harassment and I encourage everyone else to do the same.”
“We were disappointed to hear of the inappropriate comments made to FIA steward Sylvia Bellot. There is no place for any form of harassment in our sport and we condemn this behaviour,” the Alpine team posted on social media.
