During the second practice in Mexico City, Pirelli completed testing of prototype tires for 2023, the next time the teams receive a new tire to test after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where the final specification will be presented.
Simone BerraPirelli Chief Engineer: “Friday’s program turned out to be an intensive one. The teams tried to cover as much distance as possible, gathering information for the current weekend in practice one and working with prototype tires for 2023 in practice two – these were softer slippery compounds than last week in Austin.
Due to the frequent appearance of red flags, especially in the first training session, some teams were unable to complete the program, but we still collected a useful amount of information for analysis.
As expected, the track progressed throughout the day, but in the morning it was in better condition than we expected, providing an acceptable level of grip.
As for the preparation for this weekend’s race, the teams are a bit lacking in data, so the third practice will be especially important. On Friday, the riders mainly worked with hard and soft tires, the harder rubber slipped a little and the softer one barely wears out, so it can be fully used in the race.
