McLaren upgrades MCL36 for Spain and Monaco

The McLaren team is gearing up for the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix and looking to earn points as the MCL36 performed well in winter testing at the Catalan circuit.

Lando Norris: “I’m happy to be back in Europe this weekend to start the race in Barcelona. I like the Spanish track because it has some nice features – there is an interesting combination of different turns and speeds, and there is always a great crowd.

Retirement in Miami is a thing of the past and now I am fully focused on preparing for the upcoming race. In February there were tests on the track in Barcelona, so I have to apply everything we learned during the season, combined with the information we got before, when we just got to grips with the new generation of cars.

The weekend in Miami showed that we are still not fast enough to fight against the leaders on a regular basis, but it is important to remain optimistic. The team is working hard to develop technical innovations, so we can hope that this will give us a new impulse to prepare for the stages in Barcelona and Monaco, separated by just a week break.

Daniel Ricardo: “I’m looking forward to the weekend in Spain! The race on the Miami track was interesting, as always, we felt a lot of support from the fans, but the American track was difficult for our team. In preparation for the Spanish Grand Prix, we have to stay positive and apply all the information we received in the previous stage.

Last year I did well in Barcelona, so I’m happy to be there again to get behind the wheel of our new car and get the most out of the MCL36. We worked on this track for testing in February, so unlike other race weekends we generally have an idea of what to prepare for.

It will be interesting to see where we can improve and test the effectiveness of the new products we will be testing this weekend.”

Andreas SeidliTeam Principal: “Although the result of the race in Miami is not what we wanted to achieve, the team is fully focused on preparing for the two European stages in a row, starting from the weekend in Barcelona.

In Spain it is a circuit that has everything: fast and slow corners, but also more difficult technical parts. In previous years our team has performed well there, earning points and now we hope to continue this.

This weekend we plan to introduce some new products. I understand that all teams are on an exceptionally tight schedule this week, because for Barcelona everyone is modernizing cars, so the battle for the points promises to be very tight.

Our car performed well in winter testing at this track, so it will be interesting to see what speeds the MCL36 will be capable of after all the improvements made since then. I hope we can compete for places in the top ten and earn a lot of points.”
