Schumacher: I didn’t succeed in Barcelona in the past

Mick Schumacher has not earned a single point in the last five races of the season. The Haas rider expects to reverse the negative trend in Barcelona.

Q: You have already driven the VF-22 in Barcelona during the pre-season testing in February. Does it give you an advantage because you already know the characteristics of the car on this track?
Mick Schumacher: I don’t think participating in the tests will give us any advantage over other teams and riders, as they have also performed these tests. Instead, it takes less time to learn the track, but it’s not necessary, because we’ve worked a lot in Barcelona in the past and I know that by heart.

The weather conditions will be different from the tests – about 20 degrees hotter, so the whole principle of working with tires will change. If we have an advantage it will be minimal and not because of the tests, but because we know the track well.

Q: How well do you understand the car after five races of the season and can you get rid of its weaknesses and reveal its strengths?
Mick SchumacherA: I don’t think we understand the features of the machine 100%. I don’t think anyone understands. We keep figuring out why it behaves this way under certain conditions and not otherwise. In addition, we have done an update on the machine, which also complicates understanding. If the car doesn’t change, you know it well after five races, but we’re constantly refining it and trying to make it faster.

Our car has many advantages: the way it consumes rubber and behaves when cornering. I look forward to the next phase.

Q: Your best result in Spain is third place in 2020 in Formula 2. Do you think you can unleash the full potential of the VF-22 this weekend?
Mick Schumacher: I hope so, but the same can be said by most of the riders who have ridden a lot on this track. In the past I didn’t do well in Barcelona, but I hope it will be better this time.

Q: In Barcelona the balance of power remains the same as in the first five races?
Mick Schumacher: We have already seen changes in the balance of power, although the results are very compact. We all wonder what the lineup will be at the end of the season. I hope that by the end of the season the gap will not get bigger, but rather smaller, and that the teams in the middle group will approach the two leaders – Ferrari and Red Bull.

The one-lap pace, which we showed in the closing laps of the race at Imola, was already close to their pace, but the race pace is generally different between the middle and top teams. Interesting times are coming.
