Former Formula 1 driver, Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) president Alex Wurz supported the FIA’s decision to ban jewelery and jewelery from racing. Wurz made such a statement following a public dispute between Lewis Hamilton and FIA president Mohammed bin Sulayem, who promised to fine a Mercedes driver if he does not remove jewelry before driving.
Alex Wurtz: “This is the right rule for many reasons, but I would use a slightly different style to convey the need to follow it. I do not want to become a participant in a skirmish, on the contrary, we must work together on this issue. I prefer this approach.”
As an example, Alex Wurtz cited Danish racer Chris Nissen, who was injured in a fire at Mount Fuji in 1988 for not wearing flameproof underwear.
“For him, the most painful result of that fire, which did not last long, was that the elastic band of his regular underpants burned through the skin. He said he experienced agony and pain for years. His words taught me a lot.
That’s when I told myself I didn’t want to live with the same consequences because I wasn’t wearing flameproof underwear. The same goes for jewelry.”
