Haas F1 is preparing for the Spanish Grand Prix, but unlike other teams they are not going to introduce technical innovations now, but only plan to do so after a few races.
Q: Of course the Miami Grand Prix was a missed opportunity race for you, because during that race both drivers of the team were in the top ten. How do you manage to keep a positive attitude and not worry about the fact that it could have ended much better?
Gunther Steiner: The results of qualifying and the race did not suit us, but we really have to stay positive. The good thing is we have a good car, and you just need to find the right settings and learn how to work well with rubber.
Over the course of the race in Miami we were able to regain positions until the safety car appeared on track, and only then did we roll back. That’s what we need to focus on: keeping the confidence that we have a good car and that we can fight for points.
Q: The team heads to Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for the Spanish Grand Prix. The first pre-season testing was held there this year – could this somehow make it easier for the team to prepare for the race and develop a strategy? Is there an advantage in having already worked with new cars on this track?
Gunther Steiner: I wouldn’t say this gives any advantage over other teams as they were all in the tests and know this track very well. But the realization that we have already worked there and have shown good speeds thanks to good settings, gives us confidence.
If the start of work on the track goes well it usually helps to prepare well for qualifying and the race – let’s hope it will be the case this time as well.
Q: Usually the stage in Barcelona takes place at such a stage of the season when the teams start to significantly upgrade the cars and introduce whole complexes of new products – do you think the balance of power will change or stay the same as in the first five races ?
Gunther Steiner: Normally everyone prepares for technical innovations before the Spanish Grand Prix, and I think many teams are planning to introduce them. Although I don’t know what exactly they are going to introduce and how it will affect the speed of a particular machine.
But we have decided to postpone the introduction of new products for a while, I believe we already have quite efficient machine. But we don’t always manage to unlock its potential. We are preparing a whole bunch of new products, but we will present it in four or five races, there is no doubt about that.
