Haas F1 drivers Kevin Magnussen and Mick Schumacher finished 15th and 16th in qualifying in Mexico City, but the Dane has been penalized for an engine change, so his team-mate will move up a starting position.
Kevin Magnussen (15th): “Of course the weekend is not easy as I missed the first training session and the second was devoted to the Pirelli tire tests, so I worked very little on track. Still, all things considered, we performed normally.
Between the third training session and qualifying, both the wings and the underside of my car were replaced, but this completely changed the aerodynamic balance and had to be corrected. And yet we made it to the second session, which is a good sign.
Qualifying doesn’t mean much to me though as I’m being penalized and losing five positions so we’re almost starting last but we’ll see what we can achieve.
Mick Schumacher (16th): “My first lap was cancelled, although at that point I had enough time to finish 7th and that would have qualified me for the second session.
We have the pace, but today we couldn’t use it to the fullest, mainly due to the fact that I went over the limits of the track. It’s a shame because qualifying went well and we had the chance to significantly ease our task ahead of the race. However, in the past we have managed to move forward from a distant position, so there is hope.
Gunther Steiner, team leader: “For the first time we managed to get into the second part of qualifying on the Mexican circuit, it’s good. But because of the penalty Kevin will have to start from 19th position, which is not very big, but in my opinion Mick showed in his second attempt in the first session what our car is capable of.
His time allowed him to easily finish in the top ten, but he was breaking the limits of the track. Although this brought him no advantage, he still committed an offense and his circle was disbanded. The second lap on the same set of tires was not so good, because the rubber couldn’t go hard enough anymore.
It’s a shame it ended like this, but I believe the car is able to maintain a good pace and let’s hope that, like in Austin, we can regain a few positions.
