Bernie Ecclestone was involved behind the scenes in negotiations over the sanctions imposed by the FIA on Red Bull Racing for breaches of financial regulations – Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported.
The former head of Formula 1 management has a long-standing friendship with both team principal Christian Horner and FIA president Mohammed bin Sulayem. The newspaper recalled that Ecclestone was among those actively lobbying for his appointment as head of the federation, after which Bernie’s wife Fabiana Flosi-Ecclestone took over as FIA vice president.
Ecclestone, who celebrated his 92nd birthday two days ago, has long since retired but is not losing touch with the world of Formula 1. The author of the text in Corriere della Sera calls him “exclusive adviser” to Ben Sulayem, stressing that the FIA president initially insisted on the need for a compromise approach to sanctioning Red Bull and personally oversaw each stage of the process.
“It goes without saying that the verdict was passed after tripartite consultations between Bin Sulayem, Horner and Ecclestone,” the paper wrote.
