Down-the-line.ru will broadcast a direct text online broadcast: Formula 1. Mexican Grand Prix. Direct
The Hermanos Rodriguez circuit was built in 1959 and hosted its first Formula 1 Grand Prix in 1963. It hosted Formula 1 from 1963 to 1970 and then again from 1986 to 1992 before finally returning to the calendar in 2015. changed its name last year from the Mexican Grand Prix to the Mexico City Grand Prix. But this is only a formality. There was good news for the Mexicans before this weekend the circuit extended its contract with F1 until 2025, much to the delight of local fans.
The track is 4.304km long and is the highest mountain on the F1 calendar, located at an altitude of over 2500m above sea level. The lap record is held by Valtteri Bottas, who set 1 :17:774 in last year’s race with Mercedes, Verstappen winning the race. Max has three victories on the circuit, it’s a record. He also won in 2017 and 2018.
The lap begins with a 1.2 km straight where the first DRS zone is located and where the riders develop one of the highest speeds of the season. Spins 1-3 slow drivers before they enter another straight. This is followed by another hard braking zone into the fourth left corner. Drivers go through a few slow right turns on another slow stretch and eventually take a break just after turn six.
Further second sector at high speed. Turns 7-11 are the “esses” section, similar to Silverstone or what we saw at Circuit of the Americas last week. A series of fast lefts and rights that require precision to be able to maintain speed and fluidity in the section. The riders then descend another straight, where the second DRS zone is located, towards the hard braking zone at turn 12.
Right turn 12 takes drivers to part of the stadium. Baseball matches were held here until 2014, and now it is included in the F1 circuit. This section is predictably very slow to ensure safety. From turns 13 to 16, everyone is in the stadium, and here the riders start in single file. The last corner is a fast straight, very similar to the Parabolica in Monza, which brings the riders back to the main straight.
Sunday’s race will feature 71 laps and cover 305.354 km. Max Verstappen will start from pole, who will be aiming to break Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher’s records for most wins in a season. Behind him start two “Mercedes” George Russell and Lewis Hamilton. Further, Sergio Perez, for whom this track was born, “Ferrari” Carlos Sainz is only the fifth, and Charles Leclerc in qualifying missed ahead and Valteri Bottas.
