Binotto: Mercedes lost races in Austin and Mexico City

Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto believes Lewis Hamilton had a shot at winning the Mexican Grand Prix, but he failed to do so due to Mercedes strategists’ wrong decision to run the second stint on hard tires.

“We have been criticized in Hungary for the wrong strategy, but it is normal to hear criticism when we do something wrong,” Race fans quoted Binotto as saying. – Apparently Mercedes lost the race in Mexico City, as well as in Austin, due to the wrong tire choice. I mean, not only do we make mistakes, others also make wrong decisions.”

Speaking about the lack of speed among Ferrari drivers in Mexico City, Mattia Binotto cited tire problems as one of the reasons: “In the race we had to check the tire wear to guarantee a distance with one pit stop. This was one of the reasons for our slow pace. However, we continue to believe that the Soft-Medium strategy was the right choice for the race.

At one point Charles asked us about the possibility of switching to “plan C”, which meant two stops, because he understood that there was a serious load on the tires. However, if we had taken such a step, Charles would have returned to the track in heavy traffic after the pit stop and missed seven cars – this was not the right choice.

We originally planned a one pit stop strategy and I continue to consider it correct.
