In 2014, the FIA introduced a points system for riders who became involved in incidents or violations of the rules. If a driver scores 12 points in 12 months, he will be taken out of the race, but in Formula 1 that has not happened yet. Penalties expire 12 months after accrual.
The absolute leader in the number of penalty points over the past 12 months is Pierre Gasly. In the last three Grand Prix he has scored five points – now there are ten and the next one will burn out on May 22 next year. Missing the race, this or next season, is very likely.
