Daniel Ricciardo has rarely pleased his fans this year, of whom he has quite a few, but lately his popularity may have only been kept in the same baggage as he has not achieved good results for a long time.
Australian racer McLaren’s 7th place in Mexico City can’t really be considered an exceptional achievement either, but Daniel had such a good finish to yesterday’s Grand Prix that he was recognized as the “Rider of the Day” “.
Andreas Seidl, team principal, believes this is an important result for both Ricciardo and McLaren.
“If you remember how the Mexican weekend went for Daniel, it should be noted that his pace was at Lando’s level from the very first lap,” Seidl said of Sky Deutschland. – He was unlucky in qualifying as he came a little short to reach the final session.
Ricciardo felt that he was quite comfortable behind the wheel of the car, and the main point was that he drove the second part of the distance on soft tires. This allowed him to overtake one opponent after another. The result is important for Daniel as well as for us, because we earned a lot more points than Alpine.
He had a great run in the second stint, he just flew on the soft tires and was able to finish seventh despite a 10-second penalty. That is why we are very satisfied.
It’s great that we closed the gap with Alpine and that we are now only seven points apart. It is important to avoid problems in the remaining two races and to do our best with the tasks ahead, where a factor such as technical reliability will play a key role. We have a good car, a good team and two good drivers. I hope we can fight (for 4th place in the Constructors’ Championship) until the final round of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and finally reach the goal.
At the same time, Ricciardo will bid farewell to McLaren at the end of the season and has no contract until 2023. The Australian has already confirmed that he will not play in the championship, but hopes to take on the reserve role.
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff confirmed they are discussing the possibility with Daniel, but also said the driver is not just in talks with them: “He’s also communicating with Red Bull Racing. We think he’s a great guy, but we can still don’t say who will be our third driver next year. Daniel’s charm is his strongest point, besides he has been playing in the championship for a long time and he knows these cars inside out. Of course this is all in his favor, but I don’t want to spread rumors just yet because the truth is we haven’t decided yet.
