For pushing Lance Stroll off the track during the Mexico City race, Pierre Gasly was given a five-second and one-point penalty, bringing the total to ten. If you collect 12 penalty points, the rider will be disqualified for one stage and Pierre’s next points will not expire until May 2023. After the finish, Frenchman AlphaTauri criticized the stewards for the decision.
Pierre Gasly: “I am a driver, so when I see an opportunity to overtake, I use it. If the stewards didn’t like my maneuver, they could tell me over the radio to return the position. I would return and try to catch up again but there were no comments on their part which is a shame.
The stewards were supposed to speak over the radio, as they had done in the past, but not this time. The FIA has been making tough decisions lately. In the final stage in Austin, half of the pack didn’t keep the distance behind the safety car and only I was fined for this.
In Mexico City the fight was pretty intense and I don’t know why I wasn’t told to take the position back. At the end of the day, when I’m behind the wheel, I’m doing my best, and the last thing I want to get for this is stupid penalty points and wasted time in the race. The stewards are not happy with my actions, but I will talk to them to understand exactly what I need to change in my approach.
I finished four seconds behind ninth. Without the fine I would have earned points. It’s a shame the same story is repeated – in Austin I also finished 11th because of the penalty. Every weekend the same thing happens – I have to change my approach.”
