Colombian El Heraldo writes about the visit of Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali. On Monday afternoon, the Italian’s private plane landed in Barranquilla, along with Fernando Alonso’s manager, Luis Garcia Abad, who was working with the promoters of the Mexican Grand Prix.
It involved organizing a race on the city track in the 2024 or 2025 season, which could be called the Caribbean Grand Prix. Domenicali met with the city’s mayor, Jaime Pumarejo, who told reporters some details during a press conference.
Jaime Pumarejo: “I am very happy with the arrival of Stefano, it shows his belief that Barranquilla and Colombia can organize serious events. The Formula 1 Grand Prix is the biggest sporting event, we are looking for an opportunity to carry out this project.
Stefano looked at several places in our city that were not tied to the route schedule. I don’t want to create false expectations, these plans have not yet materialized, but we are in the race and we hope to make it to the finish. The fact that Formula 1 takes the time and money to come to us motivates us to keep dreaming and working on this project.
When the contract is signed, we can talk about the first race in 2024 or 2025 and hopefully in ten years. Two half-street routes have been approved – Plan A and Plan B. Both are within the metropolitan area.
The visit to Barranquilla concluded with dinner at the Manuel Restaurante, also attended by the Mayor of Pumarejo.
