Aston Martin F1 has confirmed that Stoffel Vandorn, the reigning Formula E champion, will be the team’s test driver and reserve driver for 2023.
He will perform these tasks alternately with Felipe Drugovic, and he will also have to actively work on the team-based simulator and participate in the car’s modernization process.
The 30-year-old Belgian has extensive experience in several series: in 2015 he became GP2 champion, he spent 41 Grands Prix in Formula 1 with McLaren, and the last three years he played in Formula E for the works Mercedes team and became the world champion in electric car racing this season.
He will have to combine the collaboration with Aston Martin with performances in Formula E for DS Penske.
Stoffel Vandoorne: “It is incredible to take on the duties of reserve driver in Formula 1 – I am very happy to be working with Aston Martin. I am following her progress in all areas with great interest and I know that the team has a very determined attitude.
I will work with Fernando Alonso, who I have known since racing in Formula 1, and with Lance Stroll, and I will help them fine-tune and upgrade next year’s car. This is an extremely interesting task, I am ready to take it on and I am already looking forward to working with all the staff at the base at Silverstone.
