Helmut Marko: Mercedes returns to battle

The first races of the season showed that Mercedes no longer had the former advantage, but Red Bull adviser Helmut Marko is confident that the current owners of the Constructors’ Championship will return in the battle for victory.

“Since 2014, Mercedes has had a huge advantage thanks to powerful engines,” Helmut Marko said in an interview with German journalists. – They were two seconds faster than everyone else, but logically did not show this. Now, with the transition to a new chassis and engine, the difference is not that big – at Mercedes they can no longer push a button and therefore get ahead of everyone else.

However, the team is in excellent shape and they have some of the best chassis engineers. I am very confident that they will return to battle if they get the build-up problem on the straights under control. Lewis Hamilton is just nine points behind Max – it’s almost nothing. I don’t think we can talk about the end of the Mercedes era. On the contrary, now the battle will be even.

Commenting on the Mercedes power unit being no longer the most powerful, Marco said: “I don’t know the exact reason, but it could be related to the increase from 5% to 10% synthetic fuel. It wasn’t easy for us either, but we don’t have such problems. Of course, the fact that Andy Cowell and fifty other good specialists left them also played a role.
