Dietrich Mateschitz, co-founder of Red Bull and owner of two Formula 1 teams, passed away in October. Shortly before his death, however, he managed to approve investments in the construction of a new Red Bull Racing wind tunnel.
After Red Bull bought the Jaguar team in 2004, they used an old Arrows wind tunnel repurposed from RAE Bedford, an aircraft development facility that was commissioned in 1946.
This wind tunnel has its limitations due to the age and size of the building. The new wind tunnel is being built on the basis of Red Bull Racing and will take two years to complete.
Christian Horner: “Investing in a new wind tunnel is one of the commitments Dietrich has made to the team. After the rules for working in a wind tunnel were presented, it became clear that the efficiency of our wind tunnel was not up to expectations. Therefore, a decision had to be made about major capital investments.”
