The start of the season for McLaren proved to be a difficult one – the team only earned their first points in the second phase, but the car’s speed is far from the expectations of both the fans and the team from Woking. On the eve of the home round in Australia, Daniel Ricciardo admitted that finishing in the top ten in Melbourne is equivalent to winning.
Daniel Riccardo: “After the reconstruction, the track remained smooth and fast enough. Maybe this will play into our hands and we can compete for points. I know the target isn’t too high, but right now it’s all we can count on. As long as the team doesn’t prepare serious updates, a place in the top ten equals a small win.
There were technical problems in Jeddah, which is a shame, but we were much more competitive than in Bahrain. I think both Lando and I felt that the car has gotten much better. She didn’t seem bad at first, she just lacks grip and downforce.
In a way, this is reassuring. Fundamentally, everything is not so bad with us, we just need to find an opportunity to unlock our potential.”
