Pieces: Racers’ job is to push the throttle, not snitch

For Formula 1, it has become common for drivers to complain to the team about rivals on the radio during the Grand Prix when they exceed the limits of the track.

Hans-Joachim Stuck, ex-Formula 1 driver and current head of race commissioners in Formula E, does not find this practice normal.

“I don’t understand when some riders stigmatize rivals for breaking the track limits,” Stuck said on the Austrian television channel ServusTV. – I don’t want to mention specific names, but this happens sometimes. In my opinion, the rider should not report on the radio that someone has left the track. This is pure chicane!

I think it’s up to the riders to step on the accelerator. There were a few similar cases in Mexico City, but the guys are fighting on the track and the race should be a real race!

At the same time, Stuck also commented on the work of the race directorate, who in his opinion does not always manage to make the right decisions: “I am still in charge of the race commissioners’ service in Formula E, so the problem is familiar to me. And if only one person is watching what is happening on the track in the direction of the race, it is extremely difficult to make the right decision.

However, it must be understood that motorsport has now become completely different. Today there are many new rules that did not exist in the past, such as the rule that drivers must keep a certain distance behind the safety car, etc. In my opinion all this is not good for Formula 1.
