10 years ago in Abu Dhabi Kimi said the famous phrase

Historical events are different, some are more important, some less, but sometimes it happens that apparently not the most important details related to a particular date remain in the memory of mankind.

Ten years ago, on November 4, 2012, Kimi Raikkonen, then playing for the Lotus F1 team, was leading the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, and Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari was five seconds behind, and the team wanted to inform their driver about this.

But this information did not interest him at all, and on the radio came a phrase that was destined to become historic.

“Just leave me alone, I know what to do!” Kimi answered Simon Rennie, his race engineer at the time. He really knew, because that day he won the race – to the boundless joy of the team and its many fans.

According to the Finnish newspaper Ilta-Sanomat, this sentence is often quoted inaccurately: “Leave me alone, I know what I’m doing!”. That. the original second part was “I know what to do”, not “I know what I’m doing”.

It may seem like a trifle, but when we talk about a historical saying, we should quote closer to the text if possible.

However, Kimi himself contributed to the fact that the sentence in an inaccurate version remained in the memory of the people, because after that race he sent the team 500 T-shirts with these words affixed, endorsed by the signature of the Finn himself .

Since then, a lot of gas has leaked, Kimi retired from motorsport at the end of last year, but last August he once again delighted fans of his talent, during the NASCAR race at the American Watkins Glen circuit.

Justin Marks, the owner of the Trackhouse Racing team, who invited Raikkonen, does not rule out seeing the Finn driving a NASCAR car again: “The time spent in the company of Kimi and his family gave me great pleasure. And I think he did a great job in that race. Without the accident he could have finished in the top ten or at least the first 15 riders – we developed a good tactic for him.

I still believe Kimi will still get behind the wheel of our car until he says otherwise. When the season ends, we will discuss this with him…”

At that point, when another car crashed into the Chevrolet Camaro #91, Kimi was in 8th place and it all ended with a retirement. In any case, he still seemed to know what to do that day.

And when asked after the race if he still planned to compete in the NASCAR series, Kimi replied in his usual way, “We’ll see.”
