The Red Bull Racing team violated financial rules in 2021 and was fined $7 million and a sports fine in the form of a 10% restriction on its ability to conduct aerodynamic research over the next 12 months.
The head of Red Bull Racing, Christian Horner, believes that by the end of 2022, more than half of the championship teams will exceed the budget cap, leading to new fines.
Christian Horner: “The situation in 2022 is such that six teams could violate budget constraints at the same time. Electricity prices are rising exponentially, but luckily we don’t let that stop us.
There is a chance that several teams, many of which announced this at the Formula 1 committee meeting, will exceed budget this year. As for us, we don’t believe we will move forward into 2022. However, the fine imposed on us sets a precedent for the future. We had a 10% reduction in our ability to operate in a wind tunnel, even though we were only 0.37% over budget. What is the fine if the budget is exceeded by 5%?
The FIA has set a precedent by penalizing 0.37% for overspending. The Federation has taken a strong stance on this issue to show that any violation will be taken seriously.”
