Kevin Magnussen: The team needs points

On the eve of the Brazilian Grand Prix, Haas driver Kevin Magnussen commented on AlphaTauri’s fight for eighth in the Constructors’ Championship and shared his thoughts on the track at Interlagos.

Ask Formula 1 returns to Sao Paulo, and it’s no secret that you love the local track. What is so special about Interlagos?
Kevin Magnussen: First of all, this is a unique track, more of a go-kart track due to the fact that the circle is short and fast. In addition, much of the track’s history is associated with Ayrton Senna’s name – for his fans, the Brazilian stage is special.

Q: This coming weekend will be the third of the season, which will be held in the sprint format on Saturday. How do you evaluate the performance of the team in the sprints, and are adjustments needed to make this format more interesting?
Kevin Magnussen: I think our team is doing well in sprints – this season we have earned in the previous two points. I love these weekends because things move really fast. Three free practice sessions is a lot, and weekends like this show that one practice session is enough to prepare for qualifying. Everyone is on an equal footing, so this size seems normal.

I think six sprint weekends next year is a good number, but in such phases the workload on the team is very high. From a rider’s point of view, though, it’s great.

Q: If you were to design the best track in the world, what parts of Interlagos would it include?
Kevin Magnussen: I think I would take the first three turns – “eski Senna”, but I think it will be difficult to reproduce them elsewhere as the angle of the turns and the height are unique. Nowadays many circuits have standard curbs, but it is nice that there are also circuits like in Brazil with unique curbs that you can ride on.

Q: Haas and AlphaTauri have a very close battle in the Constructors’ Championship. Does this affect how you approach the race, as each point earned can be decisive?
Kevin Magnussen: In Austin, in the last laps, I fought Sebastian Vettel, let him continue, but earned points. After such fights, you start to think about what could have been done differently. Maybe I could control it if I took more risks, but we need points, so it’s better to earn just a few points than to risk and earn nothing.
