Today, Markus Erikson, a former Formula 1 driver who has been a member of the American IndyCar series since 2019, is in his home country, where something like his tour takes place: the winner of the legendary Indy 500 race travels through the cities of Sweden and meet fans.
The tour was organized by the American company BorgWarner and the Swedish Huski Chocolate, a sponsor of Erickson, and the rider wears the famous Borg-Warner Trophy Challenge Cup around his native country, which has been awarded to the winner of the Indy 500 since 1936.
During all this time, the cup left the United States only for the fourth time: in the past it was brought to Japan and France by Takuma Sato and Simon Pagenaud, who also won at the “old brick house”, and the Borg-Warner Trophy was shown at the Festival of Speed in Goodwood.
The Swedish tour started on November 3 in Stockholm and yesterday Markus was greeted enthusiastically by his compatriots from the city of Kumla: a crowd of thousands gathered in the main square and the racer was really warmly welcomed as a national hero.
“It was an incredible, amazing day! I have no words. Thank you to everyone who came to meet me and attend the Borg-Warner Trophy. But about 8,000 people gathered in the main square of my hometown of Kumla to celebrate my victory in the Indy 500 with me. I will remember this day for the rest of my life!’ – such an emotional comment was left by a 32-year-old racer on social networks.
In 2023, Markus Eriksson will continue to drive IndyCar for the Chip Ganassi Racing team. Last season he opened the scoring with wins, this year he won in Indianapolis and finished the season in 6th place in the individual standings, and in the future he hopes to build on this success.
