Lewis Hamilton has become an honorary citizen of Brazil

Lewis Hamilton became an honorary citizen of Brazil, which was dedicated to a special ceremony that took place the night before in the capital of this South American country.

On the eve of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, the seven-time world champion was received at the Brazilian Congress in the city of Brasilia, where, to the delight of hundreds of fans, he was also named an honorary Brazilian racer.

In November 2021, when Hamilton won the Brazilian Grand Prix for the third time, local congressman Andre Figueiredo first suggested the idea of recognizing Hamilton as an honorary citizen, then this matter was considered by the official authorities, and now everything ended with a ceremony in the lower house of parliament.

“It is a great honor for me to receive such a title”, the rider reacted very emotionally. “Now I can finally say I’m one of you. I love Brazil, I have always loved Brazil and I want to dedicate this honorary title to Ayrton Senna, my hero.”

Parliament Speaker Arthur Lira called Hamilton “a hero to all Brazilians” who was British born but “has a Brazilian heart”.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff also commented: “Lewis has become an honorary citizen of Brazil and this is a very special occasion. If he received such recognition in a country of which Ayrton Senna is considered one of the heroes, then this is the true measure of his incredible achievements.

He earned this title both on Intelagos’ doorstep and for his desire to make our sport more diverse. Lewis, everyone on the team is proud of you, thank you for everything we’ve achieved together, and we’re also excited about the prospects ahead for us.
