Lewis Hamilton on Bono and “hammer time”

Peter “Bono” Bonnington became Lewis Hamilton’s race engineer in 2013 when the Briton joined Mercedes. Since then, they’ve won many races and titles — and at key moments in the race, the phrase “hammer time” from MC Hammer’s 1990 hip-hop song “U Can’t Touch This” was on the air — Lewis recently explained appearance.

Lewis Hamilton: “In our negotiations I came up with ‘hammer time’. At one point, Bono said, “It’s time to get up.” I got a little tense because I had attacked with all my strength before and said, “Next time just say it’s hammer time.

I am grateful to Bono. We’ve been through a lot with him. I think this is one of the longest, if not the longest, collaboration between a rider and an engineer. He played a big part in my success. We supported each other through good and bad times.

I love working with Bono, he is like a stepbrother to me. He’s one of the few who can stand me, except maybe Roscoe. He knows how to guide and help me during the race while keeping absolute composure. I don’t think many people could do that in his place.”
