In an interview with Der Spiegel, Sebastian Vettel said he was thinking about leaving Formula 1 in 2019, when the young Charles Leclerc, who joined Ferrari, beat him at the end of the season…
Sebastian Vettel: “Charles got behind the wheel and drove straight away. He had no such burden on his shoulders. Before that, I spent two years trying to win the title with Ferrari, and I was a bit broken, although I didn’t understand it yet. For two years I spent so much strength and energy, including psychologically, but in the end nothing was left – then doubts arose whether anything else could work.
In 2020 I was out of contract with Ferrari and thought about leaving but I still had questions for myself, unfinished business in Formula 1. I wondered if I am still able to perform at a high level in Formula 1?
No, I don’t think moving to Aston Martin is a mistake. It took me two years to get all the answers. And the fact that I now don’t have a car with which to show what I can do has also contributed to my retirement from the sport.”
