Down-the-line.com / Formula 1. Former Red Bull chief engineer Guillaume Roquelin has given his thoughts on the professional skills of Max Verstappen, who recently won the Mexican Grand Prix in Mexico City. Guillaume compared Sebastian Vettel’s appearance at Red Bull in 2009 and Verstappen in 2016.

“I think Sebastian was a more complete driver than Max when he joined us. It was about his professional level, his technique, his communication. He studied at the ‘school’ of Michael Schumacher, who was Vettel’s idol.

He asked a lot of questions, took a lot of notes and when he came to see us, he was very meticulous. It is no coincidence that he has won several titles. He was better prepared technically and morally.

I think Max may have a more natural talent, but Sebastian was the most perfect. Max has always been the boss. He has enormous self-confidence, he knows what he wants and he is very direct.

But I’ll be honest, Max is technically weak compared to other riders we’ve worked with. I think he still has a lot to do.”
