Norris: I hope to stay fourth in the sprint

The results that the McLaren drivers show during qualifying in Sao Paulo can hardly be judged unequivocally. When Lando Norris started from 4th position in Saturday’s sprint, Daniel Ricciardo failed to top 15th, after which the Australian complained about the lack of pace.

Lando Norris (4th): “I am very happy with how everything went. I think we did a great job in qualifying and showed the best possible result.

I think the only thing that could have been better was to be the very first out on the track in the last session, but it was a bit risky. Other than that, we made perfect decisions and the team did a great job.

The car left a good impression even in difficult conditions. In my attempts in three sessions I showed the 1st, 5th and 4th results, which I was very happy with. It seems to me that I worked normally on Fridays, even though I wasn’t feeling my best. I may not have ridden perfectly, but the 4th result will allow me to start the sprint from an excellent position. I hope we can keep it and earn a lot of points on Saturday.”

Daniel Riccardo (14th): “To be honest, it was nice to fly in such conditions, but we just didn’t have enough pace. Therefore it was not easy to show the maximum possible time on these tires in the first fast lap.

When I heard the results from some of the other riders, I wasn’t sure if we could have completed the lap that quickly. When we switched to slicks, it was not possible to show the desired tempo. But we will try to earn our money back tomorrow.

It’s good that there’s a sprint in the weekend schedule, it gives us two chances and I hope we can take advantage of that.
