Qualifying in Sao Paulo was not ideal for Red Bull Racing. Max Verstappen made a mistake by locking the tires in the eighth corner, and Sergio Perez came into traffic…
Christian Horner , Team Principal: “First of all congratulations Kevin Magnussen and Haas F1 on pole. Conditions were tough, with clouds swirling around the track in the first, second and third sessions, but our guys did a great job securing a spot in the final.
Unfortunately a small mistake on his eighth cost Max time loss, but in the sprint he starts from the front row. Sergio is unlucky. In the qualifying final, Leclerc came out on the intermediate tyres, hoping Charles would go into the pit lane, but he stayed on track, ruining Perez’s lap. However, I am sure that he will perform well in the sprint and be able to recover.
Max Verstappen (2nd): “Qualifying was in difficult conditions, tire lock in turn cost me pole position. It’s not an easy place there, it was necessary to understand what time you can slow down, but I didn’t want to make a serious mistake that could lead to a great loss of time.
In the sprint we have good chances, but in such circumstances anything can happen. Most importantly, we are still ahead. Let’s see how competitive we are in the sprint, the weather in Interlagos is unpredictable which always adds to the interest.
Congratulations to Kevin and Haas F1 on their first pole, I hope they enjoy the moment.”
Sergio Perez (9th): “Qualification failed. I’m stuck behind Leclerc’s Ferrari. He was going too slow on the exit lap on intermediate tires, I waited for him to go into the pits to switch to slicks, and he stayed on track, I was chasing him all lap and wasting a lot of time.
We will never know what position I could be in, I was hoping for a top three place and was angry that I only finished ninth. In the sprint I will do everything I can to bounce back and earn points.”
