Okon: Qualification and strategy determine everything in Barcelona

Esteban Ocon is looking forward to the Spanish Grand Prix and considers the coming stage almost home…

Q: How do you rate the results of the Miami Grand Prix?
Esteban Ocon: It was an unforgettable weekend, unique for everyone who participated. Americans know how to put on a good show! I experienced different emotions when I couldn’t participate in qualifying at the beginning, and then I earned points in the race. At the end of the season, the stage in Miami can certainly be called one of the best.

Returning to Europe on well-known circuits, it is important for our team to increase the number of points. Everyone wants to perform well in the coming weeks and score more points.

Q: Do you like the track in Barcelona?
Esteban Ocon: All teams and riders know this track well. We often do races and tests here, but every track has its challenges.

The first two sectors are at high speed, it is important to check the performance of the tires so that they do not overheat until the slow third sectors where you feel a loss of grip as the rubber overheats. Overtaking is tricky in Barcelona, although you can battle for position on the long straight with the help of DRS.

Good qualifications and an optimal strategy are important success factors in Barcelona. Last year I qualified fifth, so I love this track and we know we can be competitive.

Q: Do you like to compete on new tracks, such as in Miami, or on well-known tracks, such as in Barcelona?
Esteban OconA: Both have their advantages. The emergence of new circuits is the arrival of Formula 1 in new regions, as the popularity of our sport is growing. It’s great to get to know new cities, perform for new fans. In addition, when the track is new for all teams, the stage turns out to be more interesting, those who adapt better to new conditions get an advantage.

On the other hand, everyone likes to return to familiar places where we know what to expect – and are better prepared. Personally I have always liked Barcelona, for me this is another home race, given my Spanish roots. I’m looking forward to playing for the passionate Spanish fans and I hope this weekend goes smoothly.
