Carlos Sainz will lose five places at the start of Interlagos due to an engine change and Charles Leclerc will start tenth in the sprint due to inconsistencies – he was the only one to start on intermediate tires when the track was still relatively dry.
Ferrari race director Laurent Mekis explained why he chose such an unusual strategy…
Laurent Mekis: “The whole qualifying session in Sao Paulo was difficult and the final session can be compared to a lottery. We made some right decisions, but also made some mistakes – at the start of the last session with Charles. Knowing about the approaching rain, we divided the strategy of our riders.
In fact, the riders managed to do just one lap on the slicks before it started to rain. Yes, Charles was upset, but this year we have repeatedly achieved success in such circumstances, and from this situation we will draw the necessary conclusions.
We are not the only team with one rider in front and the other behind. On Friday, the long weekend just getting started, we have a chance to bounce back into the sprint. Carlos will try to get as high as possible to compensate for some of the penalty and Charles will try to reach the first three rows of the grid during Sunday’s race.”
