Russell: Sunday we claim victory

George Russell won the Sao Paulo sprint in style and Sunday’s Grand Prix starts from pole position. In addition, as Carlos Sainz, who finished second, will be fined for changing the engine, both Mercedes cars will occupy the front row of the grid.

George Russell (1st): “It was unbelievable, because we didn’t expect to be capable of such a fast pace. But the result was a confirmation of the tremendous effort we all put in and the progress the team has made.

As Austin performed perfectly on all three tracks, he makes a very good impression, although it is difficult to say what speeds Max would be capable of if he were running on soft rubber. At least I’m in a good mood right now.

Winning a sprint is not easy, as you have to find the right balance between risk and the desire to show a high result. And while I was desperate to win today’s race, I wasn’t going to take too much risk, so as not to backtrack past the prize eight and start from some distant positions. But we were lucky, we were able to complete the task.

I am extremely happy that my partner and I are starting from the front row as Lewis has done a great job and has come up from 8th position. Overall it’s great.

I have no doubt that Max will show great speed tomorrow as he breaks through the pack, but we will start from excellent positions and will probably be able to share tactics and claim victory.

Lewis Hamilton (3rd): “I’m very happy with the result, and overall the whole week is going great. Yesterday we had a difficult day, but today, having started from 8th position, we gradually made progress. Of course I congratulate George, but we have to thank the entire staff of the Mercedes base and everyone who works on the track for their dedicated work this season. This made it possible to show such a high result. On Sunday we start from the front row, which is really cool.

Now the task is to stop the attack of opponents starting behind us, but we will work together, as a team, to fulfill it. We will make every effort for this.

If we can control the degradation of rubber and the weather is good, then we can give the opponents a fight. And of course it would be great to win in Brazil!”
