During Saturday’s sprint in Sao Paulo, the Alpine riders collided twice. After the finish, Alonso made no secret of his feelings, counted down the number of races before departing for Aston Martin, and was later punished with a five-second penalty – he was found to be responsible for the second collision.
The contact struggle, which caused the team’s top ten riders to roll back to the end of the pack, garnered criticism from the management and scathing comments on social networks. Alpine said it received 882 toxic comments during and after the race, 162 of which were described as “extremely toxic”. The team said they would not tolerate “hate and discrimination”.
“No matter what happens on the track, there can be no excuse for insults or toxic remarks against our riders, team members, fans or anyone in general.
Of all the reactions we received on social media during and after the sprint, 882 are toxic and 162 are extremely toxic. This is completely unacceptable.
Unfortunately not an isolated case. We continue to see hate and discrimination online and as a team we will not tolerate this.
We will take action against individuals or groups who make or spread abusive messages on social media against our riders, team members and fans,” the team said in a statement.
