Mike Krak: We want to bring something new to every race

Aston Martin hopes that the ongoing process of upgrading the AMR22 car will have some effect, allowing the team to add a little bit, and we can expect better results in the races to come.

Whether the extent of the updates the team has been preparing for the Spanish Grand Prix has not been specified, but leader Mike Krak outlined three priority areas for engineers and designers to focus on.

“The biggest and most important changes were the aerodynamics,” says team leader Mike Krak in an interview with RTL. – Second, we tried to reduce the weight of the car. Thirdly, it had to be ensured that the control system became more informative, gave more adequate feedback. In several previous races there were quite a few incidents, our pilots often flew off the track and this is not normal.

We want to bring technical innovations to every race. Some will be less important, others more important. It is important to ensure sustainable progress. I think in a few races we will be able to improve our form, but it would be foolish to promise that in race X we will get such and such results, in race Y – such and such.

Even when you introduce some new solutions, you need to know how effectively they work first.

While there is an understated optimism in Krak’s words, not everyone shares that. Former Formula 1 driver and now Sky Deutschland pundit Ralf Schumacher is very skeptical of Aston Martin’s prospects.

“Sebastian Vetel is going to have a disastrous weekend, I’m sure of that,” the Kölner Express newspaper is quoted as saying. – In Barcelona all the weaknesses of this car will manifest unless it rains. And overall, I don’t think Sebastian will stay with Aston Martin longer than the current season. This project is going in the wrong direction.

My prediction is this: at the end of the year, Vettel will end his career to be able to devote himself fully to all these environmental issues that so preoccupy him. I don’t think he will get a chance to change teams. Formula 1 is developing very quickly and there are many young drivers ready to get into it. Sebastian can still perform at a reasonable level, but hardly anyone is ready to connect their future with him.
