Yesterday at the Brazilian Grand Prix a sprint took place and was won by George Russell and now two Mercedes will start the race from the front row, as his team-mate Lewis Hamilton finished just behind him. Max Verstappen was in the lead for a long time, but at the same time he was on the midrange, which also wore out, like the software of his rivals, moreover the Dutchman’s front plate came off. As a result, he barely took fourth place, but he will start from third, since Sainz had his engine changed and the Spaniard received a 5-place penalty.

Hamilton had to wait for his place in the front row to be confirmed as the seven-time world champion was under investigation for a grid violation. But in the end everything worked.

Sergio Pérez finished fifth behind Verstappen in the sprint, while Charles Leclerc, his second-place rival in the Drivers’ Championship, was sixth.

Lando Norris, who started fourth, overcame his battle with illness to finish seventh, while Magnussen took the final point to finish in eighth place.

When F1 introduced sprint racing last season, Saturday’s jaw-dropping spectacle in Brazil was exactly what the sport’s governing body wanted to see.

The fight over each of the 24 laps confirmed the importance of organizing sprint races on tracks where overtaking is possible.

The race was helped by wet qualifying on Friday, in which Magnussen took a shock pole for Haas. Even before the start of the race, there was cause for intrigue, as it turned out that Verstappen, along with Nicholas Latifi of Williams, were the only riders not to have started on the medium.

Red Bull explained after the sprint that the decision was made to leave two sets of new software on Sunday, but the decision no doubt backfired in the short term.

Verstappen immediately came under pressure from Russell at the start and although he was able to hold off Mercedes before passing Magnussen, the Dutchman was unable to get out of the DRS zone.

Russell kept up the pressure and nearly passed Verstappen twice before finally doing it on his third try.

As the Mercedes quickly retreated, Verstappen fell into the clutches of Sainz, who was being chased by Hamilton, and it was unclear whether the world champion was losing further speed as a result of hitting debris on the road. track.

Verstappen, who earlier this week described sprints as “boring” for lack of risk and action, bravely tried to ward off Sainz. The Spaniard missed it in the first corner before the pair made contact on the exit.

As Verstappen’s front wing was damaged, Max saw his 2021 rival Hamilton pass him easily on the next lap and might have lost another place to the Dutchman had it not been for the friendly face of his Red Bull teammate Sergio Pérez behind him.

There were also a few skirmishes between teammates in the middle. It was the Alpine duo Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso who set off from sixth and seventh place respectively and collided on the first lap.

Ocon forced Alonso to the side when the Spaniard tried to pass him on Turn 4, but Fernando barely managed to keep control of his car when he came over the curb.

They then made contact at the end of the lap when Alonso again attempted to pass Ocon at the finish line, causing damage to both cars and finishing 15th and 18th respectively.

Alonso, who moves from Alpine to Aston Martin at the end of the season, expressed his displeasure with his team-mate after the race but it was the Spaniard who was handed a five-second penalty for a second incident , due to which he will now start behind Ocon.

However, there is no guarantee Alonso will be any easier next year as future team-mate Lance Stroll received a 10-second penalty for forcing Sebastian Vettel’s fellow Aston Martin off the track when the German attempted to exceed it.

Vettel was more diplomatic than Alonso after the race, saying it’s a “thin line” when you’re “fighting for your place” in sport.

After the sprint, more drama ensued when Pierre Gasly faced a one-race ban while under investigation by the stewards for driving too slowly during the warm-up lap before the race.

The Frenchman is just two points away from a one-race suspension and could have received a penalty that would have resulted in a 12-point limit breach. On the other hand, he could be fined at Alpha Tauri for cleaning up before moving to Alpin next year, as he might miss racing next season with a new team.
