Max Verstappen started on the Medium in Saturday’s sprint and led the race, but lost speed in the second half of the distance and finished only fourth.
Christian Horner, Team Principal: “Before the sprint, we were sure that the Soft tires would not last as long, so we decided to start on Medium. It would have been difficult for us in the first 12 laps, and in the second half of the race we were hoping to gain an advantage, but the calculation didn’t work out.
Mercedes had a very fast car today, we couldn’t hold them back. They have intensively developed this car throughout the season and gradually closed the gap. There is nothing surprising about the fact that they have achieved such results today. George did a great job winning the race.
I think soft tires would work better today, but we saved this set for tomorrow’s race. I hope this helps. An interesting race awaits us tomorrow. Two Red Bulls against two Mercedes and two Ferraris cannot be ruled out either.”
Max Verstappen (4th): “I was sure we made the right choice, but today it didn’t work out. The tire wear was too great. I think even a Soft machine would lack speed.
We will analyze everything and find the reason, but I am not sure if we can change anything until tomorrow. However, worse than today and can not be.
If your tires eventually degrade faster than your competitors, it doesn’t matter what composition you have. First of all, you need to understand why the tires didn’t work for us today.
The fight against rivals turned out to be interesting. It’s a shame it wasn’t me who caught up today, but the fights were great.”
Sergio Perez (5th): “Bad day. We have something to analyze. For some reason, the tires wore out faster than we expected, and overall the car’s balance was off.
I expected a much faster pace, but it wasn’t possible to get more out of the car, so I couldn’t fight Lewis or Carlos and get close to Max at the end of the race.
This weekend we are behind Mercedes and Ferrari, they are very fast. Between the second practice and the sprint we lost speed – on Saturday morning I was more satisfied with the car. We need to understand what happened and improve to do well in the race.”
