Wolff: It wasn’t clear if George would make it to the finish line

In São Paulo, George Russell won his first Grand Prix, unaware that his car was leaking coolant and the Mercedes team feared he would not make it to the finish.

Toto Wolff was not in Brazil this weekend, but he followed the track from the base in Brackley and told reporters about this story after the race.

“During the race, George’s car was found to be leaking coolant and it was not clear if we would make it to the finish,” he admitted. – But together with the team we decided not to tell the rider about the developing problem, so as not to worry him.

We discussed this with the team and everyone agreed that we should let him go to the finish despite the leak, because there was still something in the cooling system, and we were just trying to make it to the end of the distance.

Russell won the São Paulo Grand Prix two years after his Mercedes debut, replacing an ailing Lewis Hamilton on the team. Then, at the Sahir Grand Prix held in December 2020, George was on his way to victory but missed it due to faulty actions by the team, and now Wolff remembered that matter.

“I think he deserved to win then in Bahrain, but we disappointed him,” said the head of the Mercedes team. “That’s why we’re so happy with his win today, because he could have won the race two years ago, but he didn’t then. But now George opened the scoring with wins.
