Many teams have prepared novelties for the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend, but Haas is not among them. Before the stage, team leader Gunther Steiner said the car updates would come a little later, and on Thursday in Barcelona he specified the dates – for the French Grand Prix in the second half of July.
Günther Steiner: “We know what we are doing, we have a plan and we stick to it. We will not alter our intentions by reacting to the actions of rivals. You will see when new items appear on our car – they will be in all areas, the updates are quite important. I think they will be ready to race in France.
The lack of new products will not affect us, otherwise we would have brought updates earlier. We have taken this step consciously, because we believe that we can still achieve a lot with the car that we now have at our disposal. I don’t know what novelties the others have prepared. Many have announced major updates, but I don’t know how good they are.
It’s not just about new parts, it’s important to understand the features of the car. This year it is especially difficult to evaluate the effectiveness of updates due to the build up of the car on the straights – once this effect manifests you immediately lose speed. If you can get rid of the build-up, you drive fast, but that does not mean that the novelties have worked. The reason may be the correct settings.
When asked whether the decision to delay updates was due to budget constraints, Steiner was succinct: “The decision isn’t about budget constraints, it’s about the size of our budget!”
